Jazz I
Jazz Ensemble I is the premier, audition-only jazz ensemble at Gahr High School, designed for advanced, highly committed musicians. This performance-based ensemble provides students with a professional, real-world jazz experience, performing a wide range of styles including swing, bebop, Latin, funk, fusion, and contemporary jazz.
Students in Jazz I focus on advanced ensemble skills, stylistic interpretation, and improvisation, with an emphasis on musical independence, leadership, and accountability. Repertoire is challenging and demanding, and students are expected to prepare music at a high level both individually and as an ensemble. Performances include concerts, festivals, clinics, school events, and community performances throughout the year.
Jazz Ensemble I meets during zero period and begins promptly at 7:17 AM. Students must demonstrate strong sight-reading skills, solid musicianship, and a high level of commitment. Regular attendance at rehearsals – especially leading up to performances – is mandatory. All students must also be enrolled in another daytime performance ensemble (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, or Percussion).
Students must be in the Gahr Instrumental Music Program for a minimum of one (1) year or have participated in a middle school jazz band to be eligible to audition for Jazz Ensemble. While prior experience in middle school or another high school can certainly be helpful, there is specific training, fundamentals, and rehearsal procedures that are unique for our program.
